A Scary Night

Last night I fed Shawn and then laid him down and then laid down myself. He started to cry, Charlie picked him up and said he spit up. After turning on the light, we discovered that there was blood in his spit up and little blood clots! We totally freaked out!!! We had no idea what to do so I called my mom. She suggested to call the 24/7 nurse on our insurance card. She really didn’t know anything and said to call our pediatrician. We ended up talking to a triage nurse and she said it was very common for breastfed babies to spit up blood if the mom is very sore and cracked and to made an appointment with the Dr. in the morning. This made us feel better but I don’t know if I will ever get the image of my precious baby with blood tinged spit up all over his P.J.s. Definitely the scariest thing I have ever had to go through.

We met with a lactation consultant this morning to help me heal and to get Shawn to latch correctly. This woman was amazing! She helped me so much! Hopefully the next couple of days will go more smoothly!

Christina, That is SO scary. When I had Andrew, I had to call those nurses on the insurance card a couple of times and all they ever told me was to go to the ER. I never went. I didn't feel the situation warranted it and I was right every time.

I remember how hard breastfeeding is at first. I'm glad you have a good consultant. We had a good one and she gave me some good advice and we were able to work things out and nurse for over a year.

Good luck with everything! Those first couple of weeks can sometimes be crazy!! If it's crazy for you, I promise it gets better. If it's not crazy - count your blessings!
